Visit to New York City and Ground Zero

September 28-30, 2002

I took a short trip to New York to visit a friend. Though before I arrived in New York, I had hoped to take a lot more photos, it turned out that I didn't really have the time to take photos. Nevertheless, it was a great trip ... good company, tasty food, wonderful entertainment, and an unexpected surprise.

New York is definitely an interesting place ... wonderfully lit buildings and billboards at night near the Theater District, beautiful and photogenic Central Park, old and quaint apartments and homes, and the obvious tourist spots. I'd really love to go back some day and take photos of the old buildings ... some of the narrow streets I had a chance to walk down would have made beautiful pictures.

My friend was able to find several great eateries. So, I obviously ate very well while I was there. I would have to say that eating in New York is generally a lot more expensive than in CA ... by 30-50%. I suppose living in New York is generally very expensive but you also get paid more.

I was also treated to the "42nd Street" musical. I don't know much about musicals but I really enjoyed this one. Great music, beautiful lighting and stage design, and, most of all, incredible tap dancing and singing by the performers. The storyline is predictable and there are some slow scenes. But, it is funny and very enjoyable to watch. I'd really recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it or who may be visiting New York in the future.

One place I really wanted to visit while I was in New York was Ground Zero. So, on Sunday, we made our way down to the Financial District with great hopes of seeing the place that changed our lives forever. When we got there, I was immediately disappointed to see great fences preventing entrance to the center of Ground Zero and also from taking any good photographs of the place. There was a large crowd of tourists visiting the site, reading and viewing images on the fences, and peeking through any holes they could find.

While visiting Ground Zero, we were privy to witness the annual Flight 93 Remembrance March taking place at the time. It was a very solemn and moving experience and I felt very honored to be photographing such a momentous occassion. Though I was not there in any official news capacity, I felt the need to capture the moment as best I could so that I may share it with others who did not witness the event.
